Based on the buzz coming from CONEXPO-CON/AGG earlier this month, it’s clear earthmoving machines are going through a renaissance as the world turns its attention to things like alternative power solutions and autonomous operation.

While those advancements are certainly revolutionary, it’s important to also look at the smaller things that can make a meaningful impact on efficiency and productivity. On that score, let’s take a look at the WPU1550A reversible plate compactor from Wacker Neuson.

Its smallest gasoline-powered reversible plate, the WPU1550A will remind contractors and Wacker Neuson dealers of the company’s WP1550A single-direction plates. That’s because the new WPU1550A takes the best of the WP series and combines it with the company’s reversible plate technology.

The result is a compact and lightweight reversible plate designed to maneuver in tight spaces while compacting granular and mixed soils, asphalt, as well as interlocking paving stones.

Here’s what’s different: The plate’s direction can be easily changed from forward to reverse via a mechanical shift lever placed within easy reach on the guide handle. The result is a lightweight, easily maneuverable plate compactor that goes wherever it’s needed.

Wacker Neuson introduced the WP series over 25 years ago. The WPU1550A follows many of the familiar standards - powered by a 4.8-hp Honda engine, it produces 3,372 lbs. of force across a 19.7-in. baseplate, with a forward travel speed up to 65 feet per minute.

The low-vibration guide handle allows for extended operating time and can be tilted forward to assist in uphill travel.

The heavy-duty baseplate made of nodular cast iron is specially contoured to be easily maneuvered while producing smooth asphalt finishes. The full frame protects the engine and water tank from damage and includes a central lifting point for easy loading and unloading.

The WPU1550A is started and stopped via an integrated remote throttle control lever. Also integrated into the machine is a transport wheel set that provides for mobility around the job site and shop.

Wacker Neuson’s new WPU1550A reversible plate series is available with or without a water tank and sprinkling system for asphalt applications. The water tank can be detached without tools for refilling and includes a large primary intake filter to protect against sprinkler bar clogging and contamination. The water slots on the sprinkler bar provide for equal distribution and the water flow can be controlled by adjusting the shut-off valve.
